[Alpha Biz= Ellie Kim] Naver has secured renewable energy for its data centers by investing in a wind power project, marking the first case in Korea where an RE100-committed company directly acquires equity in a renewable energy generation firm.

On April 21, Naver announced it had signed a direct power purchase agreement (PPA) with GS E&R and will acquire a 30% stake in a wind power plant currently under construction.

A direct PPA allows electricity consumers to procure renewable energy directly from producers without going through the Korea Electric Power Corporation, and is considered an effective means of achieving RE100 goals.

The wind farm, located in Yeongyang County, North Gyeongsang Province, is scheduled to begin commercial operations in the first half of 2028, with an annual production capacity of approximately 180 GWh.

The electricity generated will be used to power Naver’s data centers, including “GAK Sejong” and “GAK Chuncheon.”

By going beyond simple energy procurement and directly investing in the generation asset, Naver aims to secure a stable, long-term renewable energy supply. The company targets increasing its renewable energy usage ratio to 46% by 2029.
